Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could change a life with each gift that you buy this holiday season? Instead of trying to catch the best sale in town, this season try to support local artisans at holiday markets, small shops and ones helping to empower women around the world.
I’m excited that every year I can share new options with my readers. If I’ve missed your favourite, please let me know in the comments, I’ll be sure to add it next year!
Made for Freedom
Their mission is to help end human trafficking. “We specifically engage with centers that work with women and girls who have been exploited and marginalized to provide them with the skills and wages they need to rebuild their lives.”
Their collection is modest but I love their accessories.
Once rescued, survivors of sex trafficking need professional opportunities to rebuild their lives and that’s exactly what Purpose Jewelry provides. They are a social enterprise with a charitable partner. “Holistic care is provided through our non-profit, International Sanctuary, and includes education, health care, and counseling.”
The jewelry is simple and elegant, my favourite are the earrings.
The Little Market
This is an online fair trade shop (actually an independent nonprofit) that works to empower women artisans around the world. “Our mission is to build sustainable partnerships with artisans from around the world, by connecting them with customers through an online marketplace. We seek to empower women artisans to rise above poverty and support their families.”
They have a large variety of products and you can filter by your budget which is nice. The baby knits are super cute, like these booties!
This store is all about sustainability and all their items are either ethically sourced or eco-friendly or both! Their badge system is great and lets you shop by “wellness” which means you can filter products to see if they’re made in USA, vegan, organic, zero waste, etc. “It’s about shopping your values without compromising your style.”
Their collection is plentiful, you can buy anything from men’s cords to blankets to boots. I’m especially a fan of these funky socks.
If you want to just support charities that do great work, look through their gift catalogues. Here are a few options:
Warmest Wishes – United Way Toronto & York Region
Gifts of Hope – Plan Canada
Gifts of Joy – Save the Children
Wishing you and your loved a safe and joyful holiday season!
