‘Tis the season!

‘Tis the season!

The holidays are just around the corner and no matter what you celebrate, you might need some gift ideas and suggestions of where to shop?

Here’s a list of 5 stores that I love because they sell beautiful products that empower women!

  1. Lotus Wonders

Headed up by Mehrak Mehrvar (sweetest person alive), this store offers a gorgeous selection of make-up bags, change purses, wallets and more. They don’t have a huge number of items, but their humble collection is handmade by women in Cambodia.

  1. To The Market

To quote their site, TTM showcases handmade goods made exclusively by proud and passionate artisans who have overcome the perils of abuse, conflict, and disease. You can actually shop by cause, which I find really interesting. They have a large selection of items and tell stories as they go along. Newly launched, I’m a big fan of this one!

  1. Tulsi Crafts

I stumbled upon this store and Margot Lieftinck through Twitter, and I’m so glad I did. Tulsi sells fairly made products created in Bangladesh from repurposed, recycled or natural materials. They ensure fair wages and Tulsi cooperates with organisations that invest in the empowerment of women.

  1. Ten Thousand Villages

The oldest and largest fair trade organization in North America! They create opportunities for artisans in developing countries to earn income by bringing their products and stories to foreign markets through long-term, fair trading relationships.

  1. Etsy

The products you can buy on Etsy range from coffee tables, to jewellery, to swimwear. One of the originals out there, this store enables anyone to put up a store (2 of my friends have) and showcase their products. Best part is that you can use a filter and narrow down your search results! I always use the handmade filter and often try to shop locally.

You would benefit from being an online shopper in order to fully enjoy this list. But doesn’t the idea of avoiding the mayhem that is the mall at this time of year, sound appealing?

If you know of any other stores selling handmade, slavery free products that benefit our world, leave their names in the comment section. Some of my other favourites that sell handmade, often earth friendly products are:

Uncommon Goods

Herbivore Clothing

Sevenly

You can always donate to charities while shopping and check out stores of Plan Canada and Oxfam Canada! (There are a LOT of options if you want to go this route but these two effectively empower girls/women and have local chapters in many countries.)

Happy guilt-free shopping. Wishing you and your loved ones a joyous holiday season!

With merriment,

-Kavita Dogra
